MORE of Fife’s young people than ever before are reaching their potential and getting the results they need to move on to a positive future.

Results across the exams from S5 to S6 show an improvement in Fife this year while the new S4 qualification results indicate a continuation of a trend of improvement.

The results came out on Tuesday and many pupils at Lochgelly and Beath High Schools were successful in their chosen courses.

Councillor Bryan Poole, Executive spokesperson for Education, Children, Young People and Families, said, “Congratulations to all those young people who have worked hard and done their very best to get the results they were hoping for.

“I’d also like to thank staff who have supported our young people with such professionalism. This year has required staff to balance a new approach to the curriculum and exams with the existing framework. The results speak for themselves about how well they have done this.

“Today’s results are a cumulative result of dedication from staff from nursery, through primary school and into secondary school.

“Our approach in Fife is to focus on each individual child and to help them to achieve the best they can. It is about nurturing the potential in each child and making sure they have the skills to flourish when they leave school.

“As always pupils have risen to the challenge and shown that they are well equipped to go on to further education, training or work.” Donna Manson, Head of Education (West), said, “We’re ambitious for all our young people. All our schools have been working hard to help pupils achieve the results they need. Our aim is to support them to go on to do what they want, whether that is training, further education, apprenticeships, or the world of work.

“Each student has a tailored learning plan and regular meetings to make sure work is on target and suitable for that individual.

“This year, we reviewed our curriculum and course models in secondary schools to accommodate the new exams.

“We feel that our S4 pupils are now better placed to build on their skills and knowledge than ever before having followed a more appropriate curriculum. We are also confident that our approach is delivering well for all students including those from more disadvantaged backgrounds “We are pleased that attainment in numeracy and literacy is up across the board at both Primary and Secondary level. It is important that these basics for life are built on steadily throughout a child’s education.

“These improved results across the board are testament to the continued hard work of our young people, the support of their families and the commitment of our staff. “
