LOCHGELLY firefighters were involved on an unusual mission when they were asked to rescue a horse.

Five appliances, three from Lochgelly which included the heavy rescue tender, and two from Glenrothes, were mobilised to a reported horse hanging from a wooden bridge.

The horse named ‘Splash’ is 26 years-old and had been walking over a small wooden bridge at Balbirnie Park, near Markinch, when its leg broke through one of the slates.

Fire crews, working in partnership with Police Scotland, a local vet and a local farm who assisted by the provision of a fork lift, used a combination of an animal sling, airbags and hose to rescue the trapped horse.

Splash was upset by the experience but the work of the firefighters and other people meant that the horse was none the worse for the adventure.

Station Manager Dave Latto stated it was very much a team effort and thanked all partners in enabling a successful conclusion to this unusual incident.
