RING star Emma McCulloch was at her knock-out best on Saturday night as she won her fourth successive national boxing title.

The Lochgelly fighter was in action at the Boxing Scotland Elite Championship finals at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell and walked away with the women's light flyweight 48kg title after a unanimous victory over Glasgow City's Ana Santamarina.

But the talented 26-year-old said title belt number four doesn't mean as much as her previous successes after she was overlooked for the Commonwealth Games, which begin tomorrow (Thursday) after today's opening ceremony, but believes she's proved a point to Boxing Scotland.

In February, we reported that Emma, a member with Glenrothes Boxing Club, was demanding answers from the sport's governing body after she discovered she hadn't been nominated for Gold Coast selection on social media.

Having missed out when the initial Team Scotland squad was announced in November, where Vicky Glover was the sole female selected at the 57kg weight category, Boxing Scotland announced on February 1 that inexperienced 18-year-old Megan Gordon, a Commonwealth Youth Games bronze medallist last summer, had additionally been selected to compete in the 45-48kg category.

But Emma, who has excelled at prestigious events such as the Golden Girl Championships – Europe's largest female tournament – and the Celtic Box Cup, was not informed of Boxing Scotland's decision – contrary to their own selection policy.

Although pleased to win another title, Emma told Times Sport it left her feeling flat, and explained: "The Elite Scottish Championships is a big competition and one I really look forward to, but I didn't feel any excitement at all this year.

"On the back of the Commonwealth Games disappointment, I entered the Scottish to prove a point to Boxing Scotland. I just wanted to get the job done and win the title once again, which I did.

"Given the circumstances of the Commonwealth Games selection, it means nothing to be the national champion, but I did my bit anyway and it shows the organisation that I'm still here.

"I'm still happy to have retained that title. At the end of the day, I still had to box the person in front of me, so nothing is guaranteed."

On the back of her win, Emma revealed she has been invited to compete for Scotland at the 56th 'Belgrade Winner' elite male and female tournament later this month, but added: "Stevie (McGuire, Emma's coach) also received an email from one of the Boxing Scotland coaches stating that they are looking to take a team of national champions to Serbia.

"If it was last year, I would've been for it. Unfortunately, the organisation has left a bad taste in my mouth."
