LOCHGELLY Community Council presented their Citizens of the Year awards at a special event.

The Lochgelly Citizen of the Year award was given to the Zodiac School of Dance.

The school won a world title in August at the UDO World Streetdance Championships.

And the Junior Citizen of the Year award went to little Ava Stark, the Lochgelly youngster who had a bone marrow transplant and became the public face of the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Zodiac owner Stacey Gunn, 34, was delighted with the award and it rounded off a great year for the Main Street school.

Stacey said: “It was a real surprise, I really didn’t expect the school to win this award but we’re so grateful and appreciative. The community really know who we are, we’ve been around for a long time, and they really come out to support us.”

Ava recently won a special award from the Anthony Nolan Trust, the John Petchey Young Hero of the Year Award.

Ava has been promoting the Trust's campaign to persuade people to be tested to see if they are suitable to become bone marrow donors.

That was after a campaign led by the youngster's mum to find a donor for Ava which was successful about a year ago.

Ava has been taking it one step at a time in her recovery schedule and is making excellent progress.

Both winners received their awards from community council chair Brian Schulz.

Said community council secretary Stevie Murray: "They were two very deserving winners.

"The Zodiac dancers have been collecting titles, including the gong at the World Street Dance event in the late summer.

"Ava has been an excellent ambassador for the Anthony Nolan Trust and both winners have promoted Lochgelly superbly."
