THE Lochgelly Citizen of the Year award has been given to Zodiac School of Dance.

Owner Stacey Gunn, 34, accepted the accolade after their annual show in the town, which was sold out and held on Friday and Saturday at the Lochgelly Centre.

To round off a perfect weekend, the world title winning dance school is hoping for TV glory next year.

Jim Mann, from Lochgelly Community Council, presented the certificate to Zodiac Dance School while Stacey’s hard work and dedication was recognised with the presentation of flowers and a bottle of bubbly from Owen and Brenda at OBB Builders in Lochgelly.

Stacey said: “It was a real surprise, I really didn’t expect the school to win this award but we’re so grateful and appreciative. The community really know who we are, we’ve been around for a long time, and they really come out to support us.”

The school dancers will hope for more accolades with the chance to shine on national TV.

The mum-of-two explained: “The annual show is always in November and both nights were sold out.

“That was on Friday and Saturday and we’d normally have our after-show party on the Sunday but we were at the Britain’s Got Talent auditions at the SECC in Glasgow.

“Unfortunately we can’t take everyone so we decide by holding auditions and choose a super crew.

“It was a lot of waiting about but the kids were really excited and with the citizen of the year award as well it rounded off a fantastic week.”

They’ll find out next year if Simon Cowell et al want them to progress further on the ITV talent contest but it’s already been a stellar 12 months for the school, based in Main Street, after picking up global recognition.

As the Times reported in August, one of their eight crews, Legacy, won a world title in August at the UDO World Streetdance Championships.

Zodiac has been going for 17 years and received funding to renovate the Lochgelly Miners Institute. They now occupy the ground floor, with two studios and a cafe area, and teach dance to 150 kids.

It caters for those aged three and up and also has a 22-strong parent crew too.
