LOCHGELLY Community Council has welcomed the commitment from Police Scotland to tackle anti-social behaviour at the town's public park and other areas.

A meeting of the community council heard that the Police were looking to step up their presence in the town at weekends to help tackle the increasing problems of anti-social behaviour across the Lochgelly.

The community council secretary, Stevie Murray said: "Despite a drop in reported crime over the previous period, problems of underage drinking appear to be on the increase.

"This is happening not only in the Public Park, which has been the focus of recent publicity, but also in the local schools.

"Police Scotland are asking local people to report all incidents where alcohol is being sold directly or indirectly to youngsters.

"They will use all intelligence to tackle the problem."

He added: "Whilst the Community Council want Fife Council to take more responsibility for the problem, there appears to be a relaxed approach to agreeing licences to sell alcohol, with little or no follow up action taken when complaints are raised".

The local authority has been working on ensuring that off license premises are fully aware of their responsibilities to ensure that youngsters are not sold drink and that the public are urged to not carry our proxy purchasing for under age people.

That can be one of the causes of problems.
