A HUNGRY man-eating plant comes to Lochgelly with Limelight Youth performing Little Shop of Horrors.

The cast are all children and the group's first full scale production will take to the stage from Thursday 22 to Saturday June 24.

Elinor Burns, the creative director of Limelight Youth, said: "Our parent company Limelight Productions performed Little Shop in 2006 as their inaugural show, and to commemorate 10 years of the company we thought it only fitting that we chose the same show for our first foray into full scale musical theatre production."

The story, which was made into a hit film in 1986, centres around nerdy florist’s assistant Seymour who receives a little help with his romantic pursuit of Audrey from his new creation, a foul-mouthed, R&B singing, giant man-eating plant named Audrey II – which demands to be fed.

The growing plant attracts a great deal of business, but after Seymour feeds Audrey’s sadistic dentist boyfriend to Audrey II, he must come up with more bodies for the bloodthirsty plant.

The entertaining shock horror musical comedy will be performed at Lochgelly Centre and there's more than a nod to the past and Dunfermline-based Limelight's original production in 2006.

Elinor said: "The cast from 11 years ago have been involved in various ways with this production.

"Our original Seymour was played by Bobby Mitchell, the chairman of Limelight Youth Academy, his daughter Rebecca also plays one of the ‘urchins’, Ronette, and the son of our original plant, Reece Ellard, takes on the role of Seymour in this version.

"And our original dentist (Steven Smyth) and Audrey (Kim Shepherd) have participated in our very entertaining marketing campaign – LY Carpool Karaoke!"

She continued: "The cast, who range from S1-S5, have been working incredibly hard on the show, rehearsing Sunday evenings for the past nine months.

"Personally, this is my directorial debut, having choreographed for a number of years (most recently assisting with LADAMA’s Mack and Mabel), but having been a member of Fife Children’s Theatre from age 11 and performing there till I left school, I feel at home on the stage there, and hope that my familiarity with the space puts the kids at ease for show week.

"Lochgelly Centre is a great theatre and brings back lots of fond memories for me and the friends I was on stage performing with.

"Although for some this is their first production, many of our members also perform with other local youth theatre groups.

"Some of our older performers are members of the main adult production company, and our Little Shop heroine Audrey (famously played by the squeaky voiced Ellen Greene in the 1986 film with Rick Moranis), is Lois Hardie, who currently provides the UK voice of Everest in the kids TV show Paw Patrol, which is on Nick Jr."

And Elinor concluded: "We have tried to create a Little Shop with a difference, encompassing multimedia, CGI and full ensemble participation; no sitting backstage getting bored in dressing rooms for our cast; they’ll need to be focussed throughout, especially when that plant gets really hungry...!"

Performances start at 7.30pm with a matinee on Saturday June 24, starting at 2.30pm.

Tickets for the show are on sale through Lochgelly Centre or through Limelight’s Box Office on 01383 738822.
