HERITAGE groups shared a £3,200 windfall following the demise of the Benarty Antiquarian Club.

It held its last meeting earlier this year and it was decided that the money left in the bank should be distributed to local causes.

The heritage groups in Lochgelly and Benarty were invited to Ore Valley Business Centre where they were each given cheques for £1,600.

Benarty Antiquarian Club was formally drawn to a close by president Lillian King in April, 66 years after its formation in the Town House, Lochgelly, in March 1951.

The two founding members, Alex Westwater and Eddie Henderson, were well known writers and local historians and the club met four times a year in Lochgelly with talks from guests speakers on a variety of subjects.

Members also visited places of interest, locally and further afield, with a spokesperson telling the Times: "There isn’t a castle or stately home in Scotland that hasn’t been visited, at one time or another, by the club."

Although interest in local history and heritage is still strong, membership numbers declined and it was decided the club should "retire gracefully".
