LOCHGELLY-based Realm Construction has celebrated scooping a top business award and now plans to build on its success.

The company, which is part of The Purvis Group, won the Developing the Young Workforce accolade at the Fife Business Awards and is now looking to take on its latest batch of recruits.

Since starting its modern apprenticeship (MA) programme in 2015, young employees have been benefitting from the scheme. It currently has 15 modern apprentices who are undertaking a three-year SVQ qualification in Civil Engineering or two-year General Construction at Fife College, and two-year Highways Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship at Edinburgh College.

All aspects of on the job training is provided and overseen by employee mentors who have also benefited and have a real commitment and passion to help these young people succeed.

Lorna Jaffray, Business Manager for The Purvis Group, said their most recent award was a reflection of the team's hard work, commitment and determination to develop Fife's young people.

"Our MA Programme offers a way into the construction industry that includes working to and gaining a SVQ qualification," she explained.

"The career progression options for construction workers are varied and this route gives young people vital hands-on experience. Links with schools and colleges has been vital to recruit apprentices, and support from Opportunities Fife, Fife Works and funding from Fife Youth Job Contract has enabled the significant investment in our youth development strategy.

"We’ve a number of employees who have progressed through the ranks learning on the job as well as during day release and night classes at College and University. The further education experience has complemented their site experience, they’ve built a solid foundation for a successful career in the construction industry."
