LOCHGELLY fight star Emma McCulloch made it a national treble on Saturday as she triumphed at the Boxing Scotland Elite Championship finals.

The talented Glenrothes Boxing Club member claimed her third successive Scottish title by defeating Lochend's Nasreen Andreson in the women's light flyweight 48kg final at Ravenscraig – and moved her closer to Commonwealth Games selection.

Emma, who won the belt in 2015 against another Lochend fighter, Johanna Ryan, retained her title last year after her scheduled opponent pulled out and there was no stopping her against the experienced Anderson.

With ranking points in the bid to make the plane for Team Scotland for next year's Commonwealth Games at stake, Emma overpowered Anderson, taking victory at the end of the three round bout by unanimous decision.

A thrilled Emma, 25, said it was a "great night for everyone involved" and said: "Thanks to my family and friends that came to support me and huge respect to my opponent – an experienced and talented boxer which I never doubted. I wouldn't have reached this point without my coaches and I'm forever grateful for the time they put in. I'm excited to see what the next chapter brings!"

Dad Allan, who also coaches at Glenrothes, said: "It was a good result, especially with the Commonwealth Games in mind. It was a good contest; we didn't know too much about the girl and Stevie (McGuire, Emma's coach) chose not to and just to let Emma box. I spoke to the girl afterwards and she told me she'd boxed since she was 14, so she's no novice. The difference was Emma was too strong physically; she got 2-3 good shots to the head in the first round and had a standing eight-second count.

"That pattern continued in the second and third rounds and it was a unanimous decision. That's Emma up to 17 fights and she's won 15, and the other girl had 23-24. She said it was the hardest fight she's ever had.

"Emma was happy with how she boxed and, because she's coming down from around 51kg to 48kg, she's physically very strong and that's probably what won her the fight. This was the one wanted to win because now they (Team Scotland selectors) can't look at anyone else for the 48kg."

Allan, who said Commonwealth Games selection would likely be confirmed later in the year, added that Emma would like to thank her sponsor, Diamond Fitness Lochgelly, for their continued support.
