P4-7 pupils from Lochgelly South Primary School were mixing up some powerful concoctions in the lab this week when Generation Science, a touring programme of science shows delivered by the Edinburgh International Science Festival, visited their school on Wednesday.

This Fizz, Boom, Bang workshop is supported by ExxonMobil and is a hands-on chemistry workshop for older pupils where they learn about pH and what happens in a chemical reaction.

They work through a range of experiments to create cool, coourful chemical reactions and explore how different chemicals can make concoctions fizz, smoke and sometimes even go BANG!

Janice Davidson, Head Teacher at Lochgelly South Primary School, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Generation Science tour to the school. "Fizz, Boom Bang is an excellent way of sparking curiosity in our older pupils. It introduces the world of chemistry using a range of experiments to create spectacular results and makes science fun and enjoyable.”

Catherine Cubitt, Exxon's Community Affairs Co-ordinator added: "ExxonMobil is pleased to be continuing to support the teaching of science, technology engineering and maths (STEM) through our Link Schools initiative and I am delighted that the pupils today are able to participate in this fun and innovative teaching of science close to our operations in Fife".

Joan Davidson, Generation Science Manager said: “We were delighted to be touring to Lochgelly South Primary School this year.

"Thanks to our supporters like ExxonMobil, over the spring and summer terms we will visit over 600 schools in Scotland, educating young learners about the wonder of science and its real world applications. Our aim is to improve the provision of science education in Scottish primary schools, bring science to life in the classroom and inform, inspire and engage young learners in science.”

Fizz, Boom, Bang is one of 15 amazing shows and workshops provided by Generation Science that are designed to make science fun, exciting, easy to understand and to help teachers cover the school science curriculum.

Since Generation Science began touring over 25 years ago, it has reached well over 1 million pupils in Scotland. It is the largest science education outreach provider in the UK, visiting schools all over Scotland with a programme of different shows and workshops for all ages, from infant classes right up to upper primary. This year the tour will visit over 600 schools in 31 Local Authority areas from the Borders to the Shetland Isles.
