THE new cycling circuit in Lochgelly has been named.

Cowdenbeath Area Committee on Wednesday approved a name for the new cycle circuit to be built near Lochgelly High School.

‘Fife Cycle Park’ was the agreed choice, following recommendation from members of the Fife People’s Panel.

The councillors have five options in front of them including Lochgelly Velo Park, Fife Velo Park, Lochgelly Cycle Circuit, Fife Cycle Park and Lochgelly Cycle Park.

The people's panel, the meeting heard, were invited to consider a list of names and make their choice and the five suggestions were the result.

The track is soon to start and is expected to attract thousands of people each year to the area.

Chair of the Committee Cllr Mark Hood said: “Fife has a strong cycling community and it’s great that this exciting project, and soon to be built facility, now has a name!

"Fife Cycle Park will be Scotland’s first closed loop cycle circuit and will give clubs, groups and events a top class facility to develop riders and run activities from. It won’t just be for enthusiasts though. The Park will offer people of all ages a safe, traffic free space to learn and improve on their cycling skills.

“Construction work will begin on site soon and we’ll see the facility ready and open before the end of 2017!”
