HOW they built electric cars, make a town's High Street better and giving Malawi children brighter learning surroundings were just three of the experiences pupils of Lochgelly and Beath High Schools told councillors about on Wednesday.

The youngsters met members of Cowdenbeath Area Committee before the body met at Lochgelly High School.

The Beath High group talked about their three initiatives each of which had an artistic theme.

The first involved giving a fresh look to the underpass that links Stenhouse Street with the Taylor Avenue part of the town.

The dark and dingy pedestrian link was transformed in four days by groups of pupils creating a number of artistic features which residents in that part of Cowdenbeath have praised.

Then they were enlisted by the Community Police team to take part in the High Street Shutter Art scheme which is ongoing in the centre of the town.

The youngsters explained how groups of pupils join a professional artist in transforming the drab security shuttering of businesses by painting items on them which represent their style of business.

Pupils who were in Malawi last October told how they had quickly realised how drab the classrooms of their two partner schools were and set about putting different murals on the walls which were much appreciated by the learners.

Meanwhile two Lochgelly STEM pupils talked about their experiences in building an electric car and then getting it up and running.

It was all about introducing girls to engineering and the duo who had been involved talked about how much they had learned.

Also involved were the school champions who spearheaded the Find A Donor For Ava event along with the Lochgelly Firefighters who talked about their experiences in assisting the Anthony Nolan Trust in finding a stem cell donor for Lochgelly three year-old Ava Stark.

They explained how they were still very much assisting the Trust and had many pupils involved.

Committee chairman, Councillor Mark Hood, and his fellow councillors were inspired by the stories told by the pupils and added: "The work of these pupils has been outstanding in so many fields and are an example of the quality of the talent at our two secondary schools."
