TALENTED Lochgelly boxer Emma McCulloch admits she feels "really chuffed" after receiving a glowing assessment at a Great Britain training camp.

The 23-year-old ring star was one of six female boxers to be called into the assessment camp at the weekend at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Emma, who created history earlier this year by becoming Boxing Scotland's first female elite light flyweight champion by beating Lochend Boxing Club's Johanna Ryan, mixed with some of the elite female and male boxers from across the country.

She produced such an impressive performance that she is set to be invited back to Sheffield in the future, with GB coaches commenting that she was operating at "a level above" where they expected.

A delighted Emma told Times Sport: "It went really well and I felt nervous before the first session on Friday because me and the other Scottish girl were the first to Scots invited to a GB assessment, so we didn't really know what to expect. I did wonder if I would be a fish out of water, but the coaches were really good and made us feel comfortable right away. It was really well structured and the training facilities there are just amazing; a lot of it is what we have here but on a much bigger scale.

"I was sparring with one of the top English girls at 52kg and got to spar with two GB boys at 49kg, which was really good to see how they operate. They were so quick and now I know what the standard is like, so if I am invited back down in six months or a year, I know what things I need to work on to improve. I knew it was going to be tough but the coaches were telling me things I can work on, but they put a report together for Boxing Scotland and mentioned to the Scotland coach that they were very pleased."

She continued: "I'm relatively inexperienced compared to some of the other girls and they think I'm probably a level above where I should be. They said that they would have me back down, so I'm really chuffed with that.

"The only downside was not sparring with Nicola Adams - I was really looking forward to seeing her, so maybe next time! But there are a lot of fighters down there at my weight so now I have contacts to try and get more experience. I feel really good about my training and want to put it into practice."

Emma's coach at Glenrothes Boxing Club, Stevie McGuire, added: "It was very successful and the coaches said she was more advanced than what she should be. She did really well and hopefully now we can get a few fights sorted out for her."
