A LIPPY drunk Kelty mechanic talked back to his mum and then smashed a window – because he didn’t like being asked where he had been.

Dean Lee Chappell (25) appeared to have been drinking and told his mum “I don’t need to tell you a damn thing” when he returned to the Beechbank Crescent house around 4.30pm on 6th March.

His mum then told him to leave, Dunfermline Sheriff Court was told on Wednesday.

Fiscal depute, Dev Kapadia, said, “She had had enough of his behaviour and said he showed no respect towards her.

“He became angry and punched a window. There was no information about the cost of damage.” Chappell, of Union Street, admitted that, without reasonable cause, he wilfully or recklessly destroyed or damaged property belonging to another and punched a window, causing it to smash. He committed the offence while on bail. The Court also heard that Chappell, had previous domestic-related convictions.

Solicitor, Stephen Morrison, said there had been “tension” between Chappell and his mum over recent months and years, due to him never having met his father.

However, Chappell had recently made contact with his dad on the internet, and his mum “took umbrage” when she found out, “contributing partly to the row”.

Mr Morrison continued, “He accepts full responsibility and is in the early throes of recognising that he has an alcohol issue.

“He was drinking every day and has got that down to drinking at weekends. For the last two weeks he’s not touched alcohol at all and even when he had cut it down at the weekends, the concern was binge-drinking.

“He says he feels better about not consuming alcohol and the plan is to try and continue with the abstinence.” Mr Morrison said the window had been fixed, adding, “I think the council has footed the bill”.

Sheriff Charles Macnair imposed a community payback order of 135 hours of unpaid work.

He told Chappell, “You have a bad record, particularly of offending towards those you should be close to.

“A lot of it is clearly drink-related. I’m glad to hear that you’re now off alcohol and I hope that continues.”
