KELTY Primary School pupils have recorded a charity single for their brave friend, ‘Wee Joe’.

Students spent Monday morning being pop stars with the help of The Beat Box company, recording a song which will soon be available to buy to raise funds for Joe’s family.

Since six-year-old Joe’s parents found out that the Primary 2 pupil had a brain tumour on February 9, the local community has raised £5,260 already and, as the Press reported on our front page last week, the school held a ‘Super Joe Day’ which cashed in another £3,000.

The money will help Joe’s family with expenses through weeks of treatment in Germany and some will also go to the Edinburgh Sick Kids charity.

Teacher Kirsty Simpson, who taught Joe last year, told the Press: “We have never had anyone in the school have to go through something like this.

“Everybody just wants to do everything they can to help Joe’s family, especially when they are going to be going to Germany for treatment.

“Joe’s mum also went to this school and many families have stayed here for generations so everybody knows each other well and they want to help each other.

“It’s not just the financial support either, I know lots of families that have sent messages to Joe to cheer him up and let them know they are thinking of him.”

Last month, Joe was rushed over to the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh after suffering from a sore head and a squinty eye.

The brave boy was given an emergency life-saving operation as his parents were told that fluid had built up on his brain and it needed to be removed immediately or he could die.

Just a few days later, he had open brain surgery to remove the tumour at the back of his head.

However, as the tumour was cancerous, doctors have sent Joe for proton therapy in Germany and have told his parents that he will also have to go through 36 weeks of chemotherapy back in Scotland.

Some of Joe’s class mates told the Press: “We are all excited to sing the song for Joe because we’re missing him. We got to see him last week and we gave him a toy. We also sent him messages.

“We think he’s a rock star!”

The Beat Box company, who have helped Kelty Primary record their song, were happy to help the good cause.

Laura Hodge and Kevin Guthrie said: “We work with the school quite a lot so at first it was suggested we could do a gig but we thought a charity single would be something all the kids could be part of. We were happy to help and we’re part of the community here, so it means more.

“Kelty is a great community in the way it looks out for everyone.

“The school sent an email out straight away to all the parents asking for our help and were quick to come up with ideas for fundraising.

“The community support for Joe has just been fantastic.”
