KELTY Main Street should have a have a set speed limit of 20mph.
Councillor Alex Campbell is asking Fife Council’s Roads Department to consider his case for the request.
He said this week: “During the election campaign the speed of traffic on Kelty Main Street was something which constantly was raised by people.
“Clearly the street has never been busier and now that we have the new community centre there along with Kelty Primary, there really needs to strong consideration of safety issues.”
Mr Campbell said he had done his own ad-hoc survey of the speeds of some vehicles on the stretch between The Cross and Black Road and he said it was quite alarming how many vehicles, of all shapes and sizes, were too ready to head along the Main Street in excess of 30mph.
Added the councillor, who was re-elected at the beginning of May: “It also has to be remembered that we have a very busy shopping area on Main Street with lots of people using the various businesses there.
“The only real traffic calming we have on the stretch of road which runs from The Cross to the junction with the road to Kinross is on Black Road.
“When you also consider that the Primary School has never been busier and the usage of the community centre at all times of day, really we should be looking at how we can improve safety levels.” Mr Campbell also pointed out that the view of a motorist coming of the community centre car park on to Main Street was reduced by the retaining wall of the centre.
He added: “There is also the fact that many of the streets running off Main Street are already 20mph zones so I think it makes sense that we have a ‘20’ zone running from The Cross down down on to Black Road and beyond to the main road to Kinross.”
Councillor Campbell pointed out that just a few months ago a decision was taken by Cowdenbeath Area Committee to make the Oakfield area to the south of the The Cross a 20mph zone.
He concluded: “I have put the matter in the hands of the roads division and hopefully they will look sympathetically on it.
“However, I feel very strongly that this is necessary and if need be I will consider bringing a motion to the Area Committee.”
