KELTY'S mining heritage will next month be the subject of a three day event.
The village is probably best remembered for its two huge pits, the Aitken and the Lindsay but in real terms mining has been taking place in and around the village since the 1800s and even before
The Kelty Mining Heritage Group are planning to have a showing of the feature film “The Happy Lands” in the Moray Institute at 7.30pm on Friday March 24, and a mining exhibition in the Kelty Community Centre, on Sunday March 26 12-6pm and Monday March 27 10am-8pm.
The Group's Janet Buist said: "Over the two days of the exhibition there will be the opportunity for members of the public to view, for free, illustrated information on the history of the Kelty pits and the story of coal, wonderful displays of pictures and paintings, and mining artefacts, etc., all relating to the proud heritage of coal mining in the Kelty area.
"Speakers will also be present throughout the Sunday afternoon and several displays and activities over the two-day event, will enable visitors – young and old – to participate in, and recall, the many aspects and memories of the social life in a typical mining village.
"Booklets and brochures commemorating the event will also be on sale".
