A KELTY man has been jailed for assaulting his heavily pregnant partner after she asked him to write names on Christmas gifts.

Aaran Swift became aggressive after a phone call and threw a Christmas tree against a wall before grabbing and pushing the woman, Dunfermline Sheriff Court heard.

Swift, 30, of Blackhall Square, previously admitted that on December 16, at an address in Kelty, he assaulted his partner, then 35 weeks pregnant, and did seize her by the arm and push her on the body causing her to fall. He behaved in a threatening and abusive manner which was likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or harm, in that he did shout and swear, act in a aggressive manner, punch a hole in the living room door, throw a Christmas tree at a wall and utter threats of violence.

Depute fiscal, Claire Bremner, told the Court that Swift had a previous domestic offence against another partner.

"He and his partner were wrapping Christmas presents when he got a phone call from his mother. He appeared to become frustrated after the call," she said.

"When his partner asked him to put names on Christmas gifts he became aggressive, shouting and punched a hole in the living room wall.

"He also picked up their Christmas tree and threw it against a window.

"He went to the bedroom and said he was leaving while his partner tried to calm him down. While the woman was on the phone to her mother he went to get his jacket, he grabbed her right arm and pushed her causing her to fall," the depute added.

The accused later contact his partner demanding money that was owed to him.

Swift was already in custody for an unrelated offence but when he was interviewed by police he denied assaulting the complainer.

Defence solicitor, Elaine Buist, said that the couple were still together and his partner had now given birth to a baby boy.

"She is in Court today and it is her position that the charges sound more alarming than they were at the time," she said.

Sheriff Charles MacNair said: "This was an assault on your partner when she was 35 weeks pregnant. It is extraordinary to assault a woman in that condition and you have the most appalling record."

Swift's record includes a High Court conviction in 2012 where he was given a 45 month jail sentence.

He was also jailed for an assault last year. Swift was jailed for four months.
