LOCHS councillor Alex Campbell has praised Kelty's Moray Institute Development Trust as it prepares to host an inaugural community market on Sunday.

More than 40 stall holders are expected to pitch up at the Main Street facility for the event that both organisers and Cllr Campbell hope will become a monthly fixture in the village's calendar.

The future of the historic building was last year called into question when it was confirmed that it would no longer function as a council provided facility once Kelty's new £7.2 million sports and community centre was completed.

It was officially opened in May but a series of community meetings to discuss options for the Institute's future use saw the creation of the trust, who were handed the keys to the building last month.

The volunteer committee created a business plan to keep the Moray open as a community facility and, earlier this month, held their first event with a summer exhibition from Kelty and District Art Group.

Cllr Campbell, who previously said that Fife Council had more inquiries about using the Institute for nursery provision, said: "The Moray Institute Development Trust have agreed a year's lease and they have done very well since taking over. They are planning a number of events moving forward and they have put in a tremendous effort because it is a big thing for the village keeping the Institute open. There is an agreement with the management centre that the things they will be doing will be different; one of the things they're trying to have is a cinema club, as well as a lot of arts and crafts.

"I have been working with them all along and I have been delighted to work with and support the group. We just need the community to come out and support it."

The market, which Cllr Campbell revealed had taken inspiration from the success of Rosyth's monthly event, will host a variety of stalls selling products from fresh fruit and veg, meats and pastries to arts and crafts. There will be a bouncy castle and face painting for the kids, as well as cafe facilities.

It will run from 11am-4pm.
