CLAIRE Baker MSP named Kelty resident Janet Buist her local hero for the official opening of the Scottish Parliament by the Queen.

The Scottish Labour MSP nominated Mrs Buist, who is a member of Kelty Community Council, to recognise her work in the village and to join the Scottish Labour MSP at the official opening of the Parliament following May’s election.

Parliament’s local heroes play an active part in the opening procession - known as the riding – which walks down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Park, before taking part in the Open Day festivities at Parliament.

Speaking to the Times, Claire Baker MSP said: “I was delighted to nominate Janet Buist as my local hero and share with her the opening of the Scottish Parliament by the Queen.

“As someone who grew up in Kelty, I have known Janet for years and I have seen her drive and determination in working with others to deliver many successful community projects.

“Janet is dedicated to supporting the area and has devoted a lot of time and energy into many civic and social projects in her community.

“Naming Janet my local hero was the least I could do to recognise her contribution to Kelty.”
