BREXIT could cost Fife over £1b in lost economic growth, according to a new report.

Now Crossgates, Hill of Beath and Moss-side SNP MP Douglas Chapman, has described the London School of Economics (LSE) study figures as “devastating for the Fife economy”.

Douglas Chapman said it was a glimpse into the damage that could be done by Britain crashing out of the EU.

A so-called 'hard Brexit' could cost the Kingdom £1.7b, while a 'soft Brexit' is estimated at £1b, according to the analysis.

Dunfermline and West Fife MP, Mr Chapman, said: "Scotland is on the precipice of suffering huge economic damage.

"Our country did not vote for this, but yet again Scotland will suffer disproportionately as the UK Government bungles Brexit.

"It’s now becoming abundantly clear there is no such thing as a good Brexit and I just hope we can hold onto as many jobs as we can through this era of UK incompetence".

He added: "The direction from Theresa May's Tory Government is rudderless, at a time when we need strong leadership in Brussels. The fact that the UK Government is with-holding their own detailed reports on the impact of Brexit on the Scottish economy tells it own story.

"Every day more stories come out - backed by proper analysis such as from this LSE study - which for West Fife and Scotland are chilling."
