IN a thrilling finish at Lochgelly Centre on Wednesday Crossgates emerged the winners of the 2017 Cowdenbeath Rotary Club Primary School Quiz.

Eleven schools battled it out for the honour and the destiny of the top spot was in doubt right up to the last question being read out by question master Neil Westgarth.

Five points covered the top six teams and going in to the last round with Crossgates and Kelty Primary being tied on 50 points with Lumphinnans just one adrift, Foulford on 48 and Cowdenbeath and St Patrick's on 46.

There was tension in the hall as the eight questions on famous people was read out.

The Crossgates team of Scott McIntyre, Kerr Easton, Emmie Tomlinson and Rosie Duncan kept their nerve and they picked up seven points out of eight to pip Foulford by one.

The success takes them through to the Fife final at Balwearie High School on Wednesday April 26 and gives Crossgates their second win in three years.

Scott, Kerr, Emmie and Rosie were delighted with their success and are looking forward to the county final.

Quizmaster Neil Westgarth was enthralled with the knowledge of the 11 teams and the tenseness of the closing rounds.

He said: "The standard of answers was first class throughout the quiz and that final round was amazing.

"Anyone of four or five teams could have won it but all credit to Crossgates for they got seven out of eight when they needed it most."

Club president, Derek Walker, said that it was excellent that 11 of the 16 primary schools in the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area had entered and he added: "I am sure that Crossgates will do us proud in the Fife final."
