FIFE Council is to consult with Crossgates Community Council to finalise what traffic calming would be appropriate for one of the village's busiest roads.

Cowdenbeath Area Committee heard on Wednesday that there had been concerns raised about the speed of traffic entering the village from the south into Inverkeithing Road.

Councillors were told that over the past five years traffic calming measures involving large 30mph signs and 'Dragon's Teeth' road road markings had been used and in the last five years there had been no injury accidents reported.

However, the Roads and Transportation Department's Scott Blyth told Wednesday's meeting in the village community centre that a speed survey had revealed that there is still 'poor speed compliance' involving vehicles exiting and entering Crossgates.

He said: "Northbound, there is only 42 per cent of traffic adhering to the speed limit and southbound the figure is 38 per cent and a third of all traffic is doing more than 40.

"It is proposed that speed cushions be implemented opposite Humbug Park and opposite the entrance to Thistle Court."

Lochs councillor Alex Campbell said that he was opposed to cushions: "I honestly think cushions are a waste of money. We have them in Kelty and these make no difference to traffic speeds. We need a speed table here I think."

Local councillor Alistair Bain feels that with a lot of construction traffic using the road a speed table would lead to too much noise and added: "I think if we had cushions appropriately placed these would work effectively and I think there should be some beyond Thistle Court."

Scott Blyth suggested that the department consult with the community council before a final decision of the positioning of the cushions is made and that was agreed.
