FIFE Council has re-iterated its plans for trials to changes in bin the collection service in a sample of homes in the Kingdom.

Last week, the Executive Committee passed a plan to find out if changes to bin collections could work.

Chris Ewing, of Resource Efficient Solutions, explained, “What we’re going to do is give a couple of options a try in 4000 homes.

“We wanted to clarify because we know some people have already read about this and are wondering what’s going on. Just to make it clear - no decision has been taken yet to change everyone’s bin collections, we’re just piloting this in some homes to get more information.

“The trial won’t start until September and we’ve yet to decide where in Fife but we’ve decided to find out more because it could improve recycling figures and save the council money”.

He added, “In the sample homes, we’re increasing how often we collect plastics because when we asked, our customers told us that bin fills up fast. In the trial homes, garden and food waste will also be collected every two weeks from March to October. In the winter months, November to February, when weather is colder and there will be less garden waste, we will collect every four weeks.

“We’ll also be trying to find out if houses that are provided with increased collections for cans and plastics are able to accommodate fewer collection of landfill waste.

“During the trials 2000 homes will have their general rubbish picked up every three weeks. The other 2000 will have landfill waste collected every four weeks, For houses that receive a four weekly collection of landfill waste individual arrangements will be made for the collection of nappies and other similar products.” Anyone who wants to read the full details of the plans, can find them under Item 12 of the Executive Committee papers online http://www.fifedirect.org.uk/publications/index.cfm?fuseaction=publication.pop&pubid=C09DAC16-B739-F88A-3D63B8748010997E A review of the findings from the pilot will go back to Executive Committee with recommendations on the next steps.
