THE long awaited Cowdenbeath Food Bank opened after a lot of organisational work behind the scenes.

It seems a long time since the first meeting at the town’s Baptist Church at the end of last summer but on Tuesday afternoon the doors opened for the first time.

The Food Bank, based at the Fountain Meeting Rooms, in Broad Street, opened between 4pm and 6pm and will open every Tuesday at the same time.Trinity Church minister, Rev Gavin Boswell, is co-ordinating the project in the town and he is still looking for more people to assist as volunteers.

He said, “Our biggest plea is to get folks to volunteer so we can build up a good rota to make sure that there is always plenty of people to meet clients and distribute the food.

“The more people involved the better and if anyone would like to join the team I would be delighted to hear from them.” The Cowdenbeath facility has its own email address cowdenbeathfoodbank@gmail.com or a call to 07580231286 will put you in touch with the organisational team.

The plan is to open one day at week just now and then the intention is to extend to a Thursday and then perhaps a Saturday.

John Drylie, of the Dunfermline Food Bank, who has worked with the volunteers in setting up the Cowdenbeath operation, told the August meeting that as several hundred of the people referred to the facility had travelled from Cowdenbeath and Kelty, he was of the opinion there was a real need for the Broad Street operation.
