FIFE Council are committed to resurfacing Cowdenbeath High Street but the local authority will not be carrying out the project until they know that there will be no excavation work needed to be carried out by utility agencies or themselves.

And as part of that trial bores are to be carried out early next week.

At the June Area Committee meeting, roads engineer Ian Jones, told councillors that the £400,000 project was to be carried out in the second-half of this year.

But he stressed that his department would be seeking to find out when it would be best to carry out the resurfacing of the 760 metres carriageway and that would include working with the business community.

“Clearly we want to find out if there is any scheduled work likely to be taking place by any agencies before we start as clearly it makes sense to get the resurfacing done after any such excavations are carried out.” He added, “We will be working with the various agencies to see if there are any projects needing done and then we will be in a position to know when we can proceed with the re-surfacing project.” And this week the Times has been told that there are areas the roads and transportation department are looking at where work may be required.

There have been concerns about problems that have been experienced after heavy rain with the road surface suffering from flooding on the stretch parallell with the Green Square.

Julie Carnell, Technician Engineer, Roads Management (South), indicated that they plan to carry out a trial bore on the stretch near Partners, on High Street.

Julie Carnell, said, “Trial holes at the culvert at Partners Bar will start on Tuesday 22nd July for approximately five days. This will determine the depth, condition and any services that could be in that culvert”.

Julie continued, “This and our other investigations along the High Street are very important. “It is only when we have the full information, we can begin to plan when the work can take place and do so with as little disruption as possible. “As part of this we are liaising with local businesses, Cowdenbeath Community Council and with Scottish Water. We’ll give further updates once our investigations are completed.”
