A COWDENBEATH teenager, who has never held a driving licence, has been jailed for 10 months after joyriding a 60-tonne HGV lorry.

Sheriff Charles Macnair described the incident as "horrific".

Reiss Wilson, 19, had been staying in his father's truck and was encouraged by his drunk friends to take the Scania lorry for a spin.

A witness phoned the police after the journey left the vehicle damaged with smashed lights and a missing licence plate.

The teen now of High Street, Cowdenbeath, previously admitted that on February 26 at Broad Street, Cowdenbeath, he did take and drive away a lorry without having either the consent of the owner or other lawful authority.

He also admitted to driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Depute fiscal, Alex Kirk, said: "He was seen to drive off in the lorry and when it returned it was damaged and they contacted the police.

"Officers traced the vehicle at around 11.20pm and found the accused in the driver's seat.

" He denied that he had been driving the vehicle but the friends who had been with him were spoken to and they all confirmed that he had been driving."

The Court heard that Wilson has been caught driving without a licence three times.

When cautioned and charged, Wilson told police: "I've been stupid".

Defence solicitor, Ian Beatson, said his client had been remanded in custody since May 8 after being refused bail.

He said: "At the time, he had been living in the vehicle when individuals came around to visit him.

"They had been consuming alcohol, but he had not.

"They became boisterous and encouraged him to drive the vehicle.

"He accepts he should have shown more sense and he is not proud of what he has done."

Sheriff Charles Macnair said: "You have previous convictions for driving whilst disqualified and at the time of this offence you were still serving the second part of a custodial sentence, which does not expire until June 4.

"You have never had a driving licence. The idea of somebody, who has never passed a driving test, driving a 60-tonne lorry is quite horrific.

"I do not consider that there is any other sentence available but a custodial one."

As well as being jailed for 10 months Wilson was banned from driving for 55 months.
