COWDENBEATH Environment Group's spring clean exercise saw a huge amount of rubbish removed from the town's Community Woodland!

The Environment Group got together a group of volunteers and did a community litter pick last weekend.

The area that was covered was from the Gleaner Petrol Station, at the top of Broad Street, down into the Woodland off the Crossgates road.

They continued down through the woodland, and along the path that runs adjacent with the railway line.

From there joining the tarmac path then on to the Green Bridge across from Morrison's supermarket, off High Street.

Said one of the volunteers: "In all there were about 50 bags and additional bits and pieces collected. Unfortunately due to circumstances not everyone was available for the photograph but the Environmental Group cannot thank these people enough.

"They did a tremendous job, bearing in mind the litter pick was originally ment to take place on the Saturday.

"Due to the bad weather, at very short notice, we changed to the Sunday.

"Thanks must also go to Fife Council's Environmental Services for removing all the bags, again at very short notice."

The volume of rubbish collected was quite staggering and the volunteer added: "We walked back up the stretch afterwards and what a difference!

"Again to the volunteers, give yourselves a huge pat on the back for a job well done".

The Environment Group have a number of ventures to tackle as they begin their task of making the town look good for the Beautiful Fife judging coming up in the summer.

However, the amount of rubbish collected in the Community Woodland area is a poor reflection on the way that this beauty spot is treated by some members of the public and the volunteers would appeal to people to think twice before throwing wrappers and the like away when enjoying a walk amongst the trees and bushes.
