ON Saturday night, there was huge excitement in Fife as Dr Who star, David Tennant, premiered his new film “You, Me & Him” at The Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy as part of the 2018 Festival of Ideas, writes our theatre and film critic Kerry Black.

Think film premieres and you imagine glitzy starlets in low cut dresses, with gallons of fake tan and hair extensions.

However, it was easy seeing this was a frozen Fife film premiere, the crowd were booted and suited in balaclavas and fleeces, even the piper on the ice glazed red carpet wore a bunnet!

The only famous face I spied was ex Prime Minister, Kirkcaldy’s own, Gordon Brown.

Strangely enough, when Tennant’s Dr Who had a run in with a Prime Minister -they turned out to be a vicious alien in disguise! Tennant was absolutely charming and signed autographs and posed for red carpet selfies galore.

This is a hilarious, sparkling British comedy film produced by Georgia Moffett, (Tennant’s wife and daughter of Peter Davison and Sandra Dickinson, who both appear in the film in cameo roles).

Yes, that’s right Georgia is both the wife and daughter of Time Lords! Written and directed by her friend and fellow actress, Daisy Aitkens, host Arabella Weir (of Two Doors Down fame), was quick to point out that amazingly enough this is the first film either woman has ever produced or directed.

The story revolves round a mismatched lesbian couple and their desire to have a baby. While sophisticated lawyer Olivia (Lucy Punch), goes for artificial insemination, her ditzy partner Alex (Faye Marsay), ends up pregnant to their sleazy, leather trousered, medallion man neighbour John (David Tennant) after a drunken party!

The initial shock of the dual pregnancies soon gives way to the reality of actually being pregnant, as the film travels through the seasons of the year, Alex floats along in a haze of hypnobirthing (with Sally Phillips on top form as the mad instructress!) and yoga-crazed yummy-mummydom, while poor Olivia falls heir to every pregnancy complication known to womankind.

With a fabulous supporting cast including Don Warrington, Sarah Parrish (Alex’s mum), Simon Bird (Olivia’s brother) and David Warner and Gemma Jones as Olivia’s posh parents, this film will make you laugh and break your heart too, as the couple juggle not only their own relationship problems but also the expectations and culture class clashes of their family and friends. The girls soon discover that despite their love of china cabinet kitsch, life is not all fairy lights round your hand painted nursery door.

This is a film that will appeal to the Brigid Jones brigade, it is a very funny tale of fake promises and fake tan, with a splash of Little Women too, which explores the definition and heartache of modern day family life. Pack the prosecco, round up your pals and head to a cinema near you!
