A PHOTO exhibition this week with images from the last 40 years will mark the end of an era as Broad Street Community Centre closes its doors for the final time this month.

Supported by a donation from Shell UK at Mossmorran, the Legacy Group have organised a special display of some of the best images captured at the community centre in Cowdenbeath.

Held over three days, from Friday March 23 to Sunday March 25, the exhibition charts the story of a remarkable life for the building, which was once part of the Fife Mining School serving thousands of people in the mining industry. The exhibition will be open between 4pm and 8pm each day.

Legacy Group Secretary, Stuart Duffy, said: “It’s a very poignant end to a place which has given thousands of local people some fantastic memories over the years – we hope many of them will come along and enjoy some of the old photos and say goodbye in their own way. We’ll also be offering people the chance to take away some of the original pictures from our archives if they’d like to keep them.”

Broad Street has been replaced by the new Maxwell Centre, a £3million facility in Stenhouse Street which opened its doors last week, with the Centre’s programme now being fully transferred across to Stenhouse Street.

The old community building, which has sat on the corner of Broad Street and Moss Side Road for over 80 years, will be demolished in the next few weeks.

The photo exhibition is the final event in a programme of activity organised by the Legcy Group over the past 12 months, including a short film, recognition events for volunteers and a time capsule burial.
