A COWDENBEATH youth group will benefit from the legacy of retired Community Worker, Kenny Aitken, after a donation was handed over for their work this week.

Broad Street Centre Management Committee have donated £500 to the Cowdenbeath Media Crew, based at the Thistle Street workshops, in the name of Mr Aitken, who worked at Broad Street for nearly 20 years.

Kenny was someone who worked very hard to establish Broad Street Centre as something which could serve all age groups in Cowdenbeath.

Presenting the donation on behalf of Kenny was Centre chairman, Danny Kinloch, who said: “We are delighted to invest this sum on behalf of Kenny into a group which is led entirely by young people in the town.

"They are doing fantastic work bringing the youths in Cowdenbeath together with practical advice and support to produce digital media projects and we hope this cheque will be used to extend the reach of the group.”

He added: “Many people will know Kenny, who now lives in Portmahomack with his wife Moira, who was at the helm at Broad Street for many years.

"He is fondly remembered for all his fantastic efforts at developing the programme at Broad Street in the 80’s and 90’s and was involved with so many other groups, including the Civic Week, for many years. Before the Centre closes, we felt it was appropriate to mark his contribution to the town and to invest in something he would have loved to be involved in!”

Cowdenbeath Media Crew are a local youth club who use sound, video, media and animation to help young people develop and grow. They meet on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons at their specially-equipped studio in the town.

The group are working on projects including a short horror film about squirrels and a film about young people’s experiences of bullying and stress. The donation from the Management Committee will be used to purchase some new equipment to improve video editing.

Graham Thompson from the Media Crew said, “We want to thank Danny and the committee very much for the donation – it will help us a great deal!

"We’ve had fantastic support from Broad Street Centre over the years and literally wouldn’t be the youth club we are today without their help.”

Broad Street Centre is due to close in the next few weeks as work is completed at the new £2.8m Maxwell Centre in Stenhouse Street.
