THE three Fife Sports Leisure Trust's three facilities in the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area are continuing to attract a good flow of users but the organisation wants to see even more coming through their doors.

Cowdenbeath Leisure Centre, Bowhill Swimming Pool and the Lumphinnans Sports Hub, at Gagarin Way, are helping local people keep fit but councillors suggested on Wednesday that a 'more joined up' approach could make things even better.

Wendy Watson, of the Trust, explained the progress that was being made at the three facilities in the area.

She said: "Cowdenbeath Leisure Centre is a very busy facility and can offer a wide range of activities to help people with their desire to keep a good level of fitness to help their wellbeing.

"However, there are parts of the Pit Road facility that does need some upgrading and the plan is to see sportshall improvements in the near future.

"The Lumphinnans facility is mainly for football but it is a busy place and of course Bowhill Pool, like the Gagarin Way hub, has received 4 Star Status and both are effective with what they offer in the way of helping people with their fitness."

Ms Watson pointed out that the facilities were catering for people of every age group and the swimming pools both provided free swimming lessons for P1 pupils through funding from the Area Committee.

She also touched on the Mind and Be Active programme which has been well patronised and helped a lot of people.

Mind and Be Active is a physical activity programme co-ordinated and delivered by Fife Sports and Leisure Trust. The 12 month programme provides personalised physical activity support for people experiencing a mental health condition. It supports people over the age of 16 with mild to moderate anxiety, depression, stress or low mood. It is suitable for all, no matter of fitness level or previous experience of physical activity.

Cowdenbeath and Kelty councillors, Darren Watt and Alex Campbell, both praised the Trust for their work in giving people opportunities to improve their wellbeing but they joined with Lochgelly, Benarty and Cardenden member, Mary Lockhart in hoping that more could be done to link up with Fife Council service providers.

Ms Lockhart said: "At Benarty Centre there are several facilities such as the gym area, the MUGA and skatepark, which are excellent and maybe could be used by other groups."

Ms Watson said: "I would agree that Benarty Centre is a superb facility and there is no doubt that there is plenty of capacity to look at having a more joined up approach to ensure that people's requirements can be fully met."

Cowdenbeath and Kelty member, Councillor Alistair Bain, asked if there were any plans to expand the sports available at Lumphinnans but was told not at this particular time.

Ms Watson added that improved wi-fi at all Trust facilities was something that had to be looked at.
