A SPECIAL Greenpower racing event will be staged at the Cowdenbeath Racewall next Friday (November 3), involving teams from schools in the Cowden-Gelly area and beyond.

The Greenpower project, based at BRAG'S Crosshill Centre, is staging the event, courtesy of GMP Scotland, and the youngsters have been busy assembling their racing cars ready for their test at the Racewall.

Said Kirsten Spence, BRAG's youth and community development manager: "We’re really excited about the developments with our Greenpower project and this event will be the first of its kind in Fife.

"There will be 18 Primary schools from across the Kingdom in attendance.

"The Greenpower Goblin Challenge introduces Primary school children (P5 – P7) to aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through the building of a battery powered kit car.

"The culmination of the project is the race event being held at Cowdenbeath Racewall.

"There will be a full day of racing run under the motorsport association rules by the Greenpower Educational Trust. "This event is being run in partnership with BRAG, Fife Council’s Education Service and the Cowdenbeath Racewall".

Added Kirsten: "This is a new strand to the F24 projects that we have been running for the last four years and it’s a great opportunity to get younger kids involved."

The BRAG project has seen a succession of teams based at the Crosshill Centre build their F24 cars and race at the likes of East Fortune and this time last year a Crosshill based car headed for the United States where the team raced against local teams and did very well.

Now this strand of the Greenpower scheme brings a younger element into meeting the challenges that the project throws up and they will get the chance to show what their vehicles can do next Friday.
