THE Central Fife Crime Prevention Panel is aiming to run several initiatives over the coming months.

And one of them will come within the next few weeks as the dark nights set in.

Wednesday's panel meeting heard that while the forthcoming Elderly Forum in November was a major part of their calendar, there were others that would be looked at.

Vice-chairman Davie Roy said: "There are a few events coming up which we will be involved in offering community safety and crime prevention advice but there are a couple of others that we will be looking to get involved in."

Member of the Cowdenbeath Community Police team, Gary Chrystal, said that as the clocks would be changing within the space of a few weeks and a lot of people did not realise that crime often rose at this time of the year.

He said: "There used to be an Operation Night Light initiative which saw a lot of information given out to householders about how to secure their home and outhouses during the days of early darkness."

Davie Roy felt that this was something that the panel could rejuvenate.

He said: "Putting lights on when you are out can dissuade potential raiders and there are other things that can be done to deter burglars."

It was agreed to look at introducing a Night Light style initiative in the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area and also speak with the organisers of the F24 Greenpower Project run at BRAG and offer assistance or sponsorship for coming events.

The project sees young people design and build their own electric racing car and take it to events.
