A SCOTTISH Government funding package will help ensure that the good work of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust in the former mining communities of the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area will continue to make a mark.

Local Government and Housing Minister, Kevin Stewart, chose the historic setting of the Scottish Mining Museum to announce an £800,000 funding package to enable the Coalfields Regeneration Trust in Scotland to ensure a brighter future for local mining areas.

The Trust's Futures Project has made a significant impact in Cardenden, Benarty, Crossgates and Kelty and it is anticipated that Lumphinnans is the next local community to benefit.

The Scottish Government’s £800,000 funding package will also enable the CRT to extend its hugely successful Coalfields Community Futures programme to another seven communities this year, as well as continue its Coalfields Community Investment Programme.

Kevin Stewart said: “We recognise the challenges faced by Scotland’s former mining communities and I’m delighted to confirm funding for the Coalfields Regeneration Trust’s 2017/2018 programme, which will continue to develop new initiatives and support communities in coalfield areas.

“Investing in community-led regeneration is at the heart our approach and CRT’s work is a fine example of how to support and enable communities to initiate and lead change in their local areas.

“I’m also happy to announce additional funding for the Trust’s plans to develop an enterprise and training hub in Kincardine to run skills and employment programmes, supporting people into work which will have a positive and lasting impact on their lives.”

Nicky Wilson, Scottish Trustee of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust said: “Over the last few years we have changed from a grant-making organisation to one which launches positive initiatives to support the communities we serve.

“At the heart of our operations is a commitment to involve local people, and give them the help and support they need to make positive improvements to their own areas.

“We appreciate the Scottish Government’s financial support to enable us to continue to deliver new and existing programmes.”

It is expected that the announcement about the Lumphinnans project will come soon.
