THE record breaking Cowdenbeath Gala Day brought Civic Week 2017 to an ideal end last weekend but there was a lot more to the town's week long of activities.

Indeed, there was a whole host of events which went on throughout the week ranging from sports events through to a pet show.

It all kicked off with a golf competition held at the Dora Course on the Saturday for the Mary Maxwell Trophy and it went to S Lee.

The runner-up was A Cornbill with the Non Handicap prize going to G Law while the Ladies competition was won by M Kubik with the junior event being won by M Dewar; runner-up T Graham.

Closest to the pin at the fourth was won by R Jones and at the 13th S Bowman. Longest drive at the 18th B Kerr; highest score on the secret hole A McConkey; wooden spoon K Ireland.

The bowls tournament also proved popular with Daryl Stewart (Broad Street), Mary McKay and Alan Leishman (Cowdenbeath), being successful.

The Primary Schools 5s competition so some highly competitive games and it was Foulford A who emerged as winners, with Hill of Beath runners-up.

The Pets Competition, held at Broad Street Centre had a massive entry.

Civic Week Committee secretary Claire Morgan said: "We had 17 dogs, 2 cats, 2 hamsters, a tortoise and a chicken!! Best turn out yet!"

There were also visits by the Royal party and the Citizen of the Year to all the senior citizens' residential homes in the town and Crossgates and sheltered housing complexes.

The Gala day parade itself was one of the longest in the history of the event at around one mile and the excellent weather made it a big boost for the Civic Week Committee members.

Alex Haddow commented: "The parade and day at the park was superb but the whole week went well.

"However, we are already looking ahead and will have to start raising funds for 2018."
