THE facility which each week ensures that local families are able to access important food supplies is needing more volunteers.

Cowdenbeath Food Bank was first established in March 2015 by the Dunfermline Food Bank organisation in order to increase accessibility of food bank provision in the Cowdenbeath and surrounding area.

Dunfermline Food Bank in Cowdenbeath have had the wonderful support of local people willing to volunteer and donate food, which has been an invaluable contribution to the success of Dunfermline Food Bank at the Fountain Meeting Rooms.

But co-ordinator Gavin Boswell said this week: "Two years on, we are looking for more volunteers who would be willing to join our existing team.

"We have operated out of the former bus shelter building on Broad Street and sought to provide a localised service that ‘revives hope and restores dignity’ of everyone who enters our doors.

"As well as providing emergency food, Dunfermline Food Bank in Cowdenbeath also provides essentials like washing powder, nappies and sanitary products to families who are struggling, as well as signposting them to other services in the local area.

"These are difficult times with the Fife-wide roll-out of Universal Credit and the benefit cap which we have found has had an impact on those who use the food bank service".

The Cowdenbeath Food Bank has had good backing from people of all age groups in the town but could do with a few more volunteers to make things continue to run smoothly.

Jonathan Astill (Project Manager – Dunfermline Foodbank) added: “If you are passionate about helping people in your community who have found themselves in a difficult situation, we are really keen to hear from you.

"There is a lot of need in our community and it’s only because of local people coming together to support local people that we can do what we do”
