THE multi-million pound Lumphinnans Care Village is set to be completed in mid summer, pupils from the village school learned on Thursday.

The project, being constructed by Fife Council's Building Services Department, was the subject of three visits by parties of children from Lumphinnans Primary.

On Thursday it was the turn of the P4/5 group and ten very interested kids were given a run down on the scheme by manager of the project, Allan Paterson, and charge-hands Craig and Andrew.

Allan explained that they had started late last year on the preparation of the ground which was basically wasteland behind Cedar Crescent.

He said: "It involved scraping a vast tonnage of soil, improving drainage and then starting the construction work.

"Things have gone well and the plan is to complete the handover in July."

Craig explained that the site of the new Care Village was formerly partly land that was used for mining purposes.

He added: "The drainage of the land was needing a lot of improvement work but that was done and the building work has gone ahead well.

"The project consists of what is a care home facility, with accommodation for 60 residents, and a sheltered housing style facility which has 30 flats.

"Once the buildings are completely finished the landscaping work will go ahead and within a matter of a few weeks the building site look of the area will completely change."

The children were invited to ask questions and they eagerly inquired about various aspects of the project, including how many people had worked on building the facilities and how many would work in the Care Village.

They also asked about the building site itself and were reminded by Craig that it can be a very dangerous place and was certainly not a playground.

Indeed, he showed them a video which underlined the dangers that lurked on such sites and the youngsters agreed they would not want to play there!

Over last week 30 children from Lumphinnans Primary visited the Care Village site, each of them having earned the opportunity to take part in competitions and they all enjoyed the experience.
