COWDENBEATH councillor Gary Guichan feels that speeding needs to become as 'social unacceptable' as drink driving for a real impact to be made on the problem in the area.

In response to the article in last week's Times on the comments from Mr Nat Whyte about drivers speeding on Foulford Road, in Cowdenbeath, Councillor Guichan said he would like to add his concerns on the subject.

Nat Whyte, a crossing control officer on Foulford Road, complained that too many motorists were simply ignoring speed limits.

He said this week: "As a councillor I get constituents contacting me on a wide range of subjects, but the issue of speeding drivers is up there with the most common complaints.

"I have received complaints about speeding from Crossgates; Main Street Hill of Beath; Lumphinanns, Bridge Street, Stenhouse Street, Broad Street, Leuchatsbeath Drive and Taylor Avenue/Drylie Street in Cowdenbeath.

"The council can spend money on installing traffic calming measures but these appear to be increasingly ineffective and since Police Scotland was created it seems that the thin blue line is becoming thinner by the day meaning that drivers being caught for speeding is becoming more remote".

He added: "We need, in some way, to make speeding as socially unacceptable as drink driving has become, because if we don't then Mr Whyte's prediction of serious accidents will surely come true".
