A COWDENBEATH lollipop man has made an appeal to drivers to cut their speed before a serious accident occurs.

Nat Whyte has been patrolling Foulford Road for some years, taking care of children going to Foulford and Cowdenbeath Primary Schools but has become increasingly worried about the determination of many motorists to ignore the 20mph speed limit on the road.

Mr Whyte fears that unless drivers show more care there will be a serious accident occurring on Foulford Road.

He said this week: "My crossing is opposite the gates to the public park and I assist children going to Foulford and Broad Street schools and over the past few years I have seen the volume of traffic using the road get greater and greater and their speeds also rise.

"There are 20mph signs and also indications of the limit on the road itself but even with these and the raised cushions it makes no difference to certain motorists."

He added: "I have also witnessed some drivers using mobile phones, texting, combing their hair and even eating a roll or drinking tea or coffee, while racing along Foulford Road!

"My message to the motorists would be, remember, it could be your child, children, a relation or a neighbour's child or children I am helping cross Foulford Road. Please give it good thoughts and help me in safely getting the children across the road heading to school or going home.

"It would be greatly appreciated by myself and people using the crossing."

Speeding traffic up Leuchatsbeath Drive has also caused problems near Foulford Primary and Cowdenbeath Area Committee has taken the decision to introduce speed cushions on the road leading towards the school.
