PUPILS, parents and staff from Foulford Primary School played a major role in their community by appealing for donations for Cowdenbeath Foodbank.

The appeal was initiated by Primary 6 pupil Lacey Watt.

Lacey (10) said: “I saw something on the news about a food bank and didn’t know what it was and my dad told me it was a special charity where people with very little money go and get some food for themselves and their family.”

Lacey was inspired by the news feature so she and her dad visited Cowdenbeath Food Bank on Broad Street and suggested her school could help. The food bank arranged for their co-ordinator, Gavin Boswell, to visit the school for a talk and provide a list of essential items the charity were most in need of.

Headteacher Mrs Clark said: “Lacey, her dad and I arranged for our P5/6 class to receive a visit from Mr Boswell from Cowdenbeath Food Bank and he encouraged us all to play our part in our community.

"All children, parents and carers were asked to bring in food and toiletry donations to help those in need.  We had an overwhelming response.

"Our pupils in P5/6 organised the donations for collection by the food bank.  This was a worthwhile experience, the pupils were able to talk about the importance of this collection and what it would mean to those in need.

"The pupils recognised that everyone needs help at different times in their life and that it is important that all members of the community help when they can.”

Lacey’s dad, Darren Watt said: “It is an uncomfortable truth that in modern Britain we have people in desperate situations often through no fault of their own.

"While we can debate about the ever-increasing demand for food banks and the growing number of supplies handed out, it is important to remember there are people behind these statistics and it is up to us as a responsible and caring society to help and support those most in need.

"Although food is an essential item to donate, we are also encouraged to donate toiletries and female sanitary products as well as baby items such as nappies and wipes."

You can donate any items at the Meeting Rooms on Broad Street on Tuesday & Thursday between 16:00-18:00 or at The Bank of Scotland branch on the High Street.
