PROMISING Picassos and miniature Monets at Denend Primary School showed off their artistic skills at an exhibition recently.

Primary 1 pupils studied the famous works of masters like Vincent Van Gogh and Gustav Klimt and then decided to create their own versions.

Working in a range of different materials, the kids from the Cardenden school made paintings, clay figures, collages and K’nex models for their own art gallery – and then acted as tour guides to impressed mums and dads.

Principal teacher Catherine Sinclair said, “It was done over a number of weeks and they created an art gallery with a little section on each artist.

“They invited carers, parents and grandparents in and then talked to them about each section, what the artist was best known for and then introduced their own piece.

“I have to say the children’s work was superb. One of the teachers said he had goosebumps when he saw what they had done.” She continued, “It was special. Their artwork was very good but they also took responsibility to stand and talk about the art gallery.

“In addition, the children had a raffle to raise money for a new garden project in the school – it’s called ‘Routes and Chutes’!” The two P1 classes, led by teachers Miss McLean and Mrs Ramos, have been learning about the artists and creating their own masterpieces since Easter.

The teachers were full of praise for the “enthusiasm” with which the pupils took on the task and the talent they displayed. Lorna Palmer, Denend headteacher, concluded, “I was delighted and amazed at the artwork the children have produced. “The project Miss McLean and Mrs Ramos planned, along with the children, offered many exciting learning opportunities which the children enjoyed. “The visitors to the art gallery were very impressed with both the quality of the artwork and the childrens’ knowledge about the artists. “We were also very proud of the way the children took responsibility to show their visitors around the gallery and explain about the artists. “The children were a credit to themselves and the school.”
