PUPILS at Cardenden’s three primary schools will this spring be taking part in a competition which will see the youngsters helping give the ABCD villages a greener look.

On Friday four Primary 5 and 6 pupils from Cardenden PS, Darci Paterson, Ollie Haxton, Aaron McMurray and Teigan Johnston, joined the Cardenden Environment Group meeting in the village.

The school pupils have been involved in lots of planting activities in and around the school. They researched which plants to put in grass, planters and baskets, to create flowers at different times of the year.

This is important because it attracts pollinating insects and bees to the local environment. The four pupils did an excellent job of explaining what work they had been doing in planting and other Eco projects in the school.

In turn they listened to the hopes and aspirations of the Cardenden Environment Group who are working hard on bulb and planting projects. They hope to enhance the natural environment of Auchterderran, Bowhill, Cardenden and Dundonald, with colourful displays.

The group, chaired by Mary Murdoch, want all three of Cardenden’s schools to take part in a special competition.

The competition is a design challenge. Pupils are being asked to design a flower bed for a daffodil display garden. The winning design will be planted out with bulbs in green areas around the village.

All pupils will be creating their own designs and will await news of the winners at the end of May.

Susan Harper, headteacher of Cardenden Primary, said, “We welcome all opportunities to meet with community groups.

“The four children who attended the meeting represented the work of the school and will ensure their fellow pupils work hard to create an interesting design.”
