KINGLASSIE councillor Bill Brown is stepping up his bid to ensure that safety measures are brought to deep ponds at the former Westfield opencast mining site.

Councillor Brown has been concerned about possible loss of life at the site since the mid summer when it became clear that youngsters saw the ponds there as play areas.

But after an 18 year-old boy died in a tragic accident at a quarry pond in Inverkeithing, he is to meet the fire station manager in Glenrothes to discuss what could be done to try to avoid a similar occurrence at Westfield.

Said Mr Brown, “There are no lifebelts or similar safety implements at the pond, which could be up to 600 feet deep, while the access to the site is not easy for vehicles.

“I am glad that Graeme Arnott has agreed to meet me at Westfield to discuss a way ahead.”
