HOPES are high that the Cardenden Community Fireworks Display will go ahead later this year.

There have been doubts about the venture, which has been a highlight of the year in Cardenden for two decades, after a lighting system was stolen last November.

The system had been supplied by Purvis Group but disappeared some time the next day which was a stunning blow to the bonfire committee.

The unit would have to have been towed away by the thieves but has not been traced.

Last year, at this time, there were concerns over the bonfire taking place as there were worries over a shortfall of cash to fund the display, at Wallsgreen Park.

However, a series of meetings ensured that the bonfire and fireworks display went ahead and it was a huge success.

But the loss of the lighting unit was a big blow and work has been going on behind the scenes to try and make sure this year’s event does go ahead.

Community activist and community council secretary, David Taylor, said, “Things are looking hopeful but we will just have to wait and see.” Each year the bonfire and fireworks display sees around 4000 people turn out at Wallsgreen.
