CARDENDEN Community Council and local Ward Councillor, Rosemary Liewald, is calling for action on illegal dumping and for youths to stop gathering under a railway viaduct in Cardenden.

Councillor Liewald said: “I have been contacted by constituents who have concerns about the mess beneath the rail bridge/viaduct which is adjacent to a footpath which heads up to Hyndloup Terrace.

"Sadly we have seen this area turned into a dumping ground with broken glass, plastics and other debris.

"This is also a gathering spot for youths who are involved in fire setting including burning our constituents' wheelie bins.

"This also poses a threat to wildlife and damages our environment, there is absolutely no need or excuse for people dumping their rubbish at this site. It is unsightly and affects the quality of life for local residents".

Chair of the Community Council, Dave Roy, said: “At its worst, illegal dumping can lead to serious pollution of the environment.

"It also encourages others to dump more waste; people are even throwing bags of rubbish into the area including used nappies!

"We are also looking at preventative measures to stop the illegal dumping and are asking Fife Council to do everything they can’ to catch these people who obviously do not care about the impact of their actions on the environment and the cost to the taxpayer for cleaning it up”.

Catriona Henderson, from Community Justice Community Payback Projects, recently met Dave and Cllr Liewald at the viaduct to discuss this issue.

The team then attended to the problem and a massive clean up exercise took place. Councillor Liewald concluded: “I wish to thank this impressive team who have worked hard and cleaned up the area to a standard that we can admire and stroll past.

"Please please lets do all we can to keep it this way, we live here, lets be proud of where we live”.

If caught, offenders can be given fixed penalty notices of £200.
