WESTFIELD is one of four sites in Fife have been shortlisted as major logistics hubs to support the expansion of Heathrow Airport.

Scotland is the only region which is guaranteed a Logistics Hub as part of a commitment made by Heathrow to the Scottish Government, with a total of 10 Scottish sites on the shortlist.

Heathrow’s expansion is the first major infrastructure project in the UK to pioneer the large-scale use of logistics hubs and aims to create jobs in every corner of the UK while creating a legacy of construction excellence in the UK for future generations.

The hubs will work by pre-assembling components off-site before transporting them in consolidated loads to Heathrow when needed.

Heathrow’s team has started their Scottish tour by visiting the former Longannet Power Station owned by Scottish Power, followed by visits to Port of Rosyth and Port Babcock at Rosyth owned by Forth Ports and Babcock respectively.

Finally they will be visiting Westfield which is a former open cast coal mine owned by Hargreaves, between Ballingry and Kinglassie.

Once Heathrow has visited the 65 sites across the UK, each landowner will be invited to make a detailed submission to Heathrow, which will be assessed on suitability, efficiency and accessibility credentials.

Gordon Mole, Senior Manager for Business & Employability said: “Fife is in an unrivalled position having 4 out of 10 Scottish sites in contention for this investment and we look forward to making a strong case, building on Fife’s key role in recent major infrastructure schemes like the Queensferry Crossing.

"The Fife sites offer excellent transport links, great infrastructure and competitive land along with a strong and innovative supply chain of local companies.”

Hargreaves have plans to make Westfield into a industrial site which is kind to the environment.

Already there is a four turbine windfarm there and there are proposals to create industrial units which will create a lot of jobs.
