FIE Council is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the situation where two Cardenden primary school children were unable to get off a school bus at their stop is not repeated.

Youngsters Olivia, 7, and Danny, 5, Buist were left stranded when their bus did not stop and it took them to Dundonald before they could get off.

Their grandparents were over a mile away waiting and wondering what had happened.

Their mum Annie was most unhappy at what had happened and wants assurances that this sort of thing cannot happen again.

Local councillor, Rosemary Liewald, was shocked with the news of the school bus not letting children off at the right stop.

She said: "I have been in touch with Mrs Susan Leslie, the headteacher at St Ninians.

"I too have expressed my concern regarding the incident and I have been reassured that the school, along with the children and parents and Stagecoach, recognise how upsetting this incident was.

"All those concerned are continuing to work together to mitigate any recurrence of any such incident happening again."

Fife Council Education Officer, Rona Maclean-Ross, said: “This was a worrying incident and we want to ensure that both the Council and the bus company learn from this.

“As a result, an amended bus driver checklist for all pupils boarding the school bus is now being filled out by the school to confirm children’s drop-off points for the driver, in an additional attempt to ensure they do not miss any stops on their route. "Stagecoach has also confirmed that, as an interim measure, their drivers will stop at every bus stop on this particular route until we are satisfied that the check list is shown to work effectively.

“We appreciate the feedback we have had from parents following the incident.

"It has helped us to determine what additional guidance might be required. Information currently available for families of children with bus passes will be extended to include children who use school buses on a fare-paying basis.”

Stagecoach confirmed that they are working with the council to ensure that drivers are given information on pupils due to get off at each stop and have contacted Olivia and Danny's parents to re-assure them that steps are being taken to ensure that this cannot occur again.
