THE Litter Clean-up campaign in the Lochgelly, Bernarty and Cardenden ward got into full swing on Thursday when over 40 children from Cardenden Primary School got their litter pickers out and made a significant impact on the two areas tackled.

The Ward 8 anti Litter Campaign is being co-ordinated by Councillor Rosemary Liewald in conjunction with the, Beautiful Fife, Fife Recycle and The Eco Schools initiative, which all schools within the ward signed up to several years ago and many have gained either their silver award or their Green Flag.

Two groups of pupils, from P6 and P4 took part in the clean-up which saw the P6 group tackle the cul-de-sac opposite the school and the P4s go up to the nearby playpark, both teams armed with high Vis shirts, gloves, bags and litter pickers.

The young people enthusiastically took on their tasks and were told how it was about looking after your own community and taking care and showing respect.

The youngsters also had two parents accompanying them on their work and class teachers Ms Watt and Ms Lindsay and they were delighted at the efforts put in by the youngsters.

They were only to tackle paper, cardboard and plastic items though and no sharp items.

Said Councillor Liewald: "The aim is to get as many primary schools in Ward 8 involved as we can get and Cardenden are first to take part and Lochgelly South are to get involved also.

"The aim is to firstly clean up the school area and streets alongside with the plan to spread the message of pride in our streets and our community.

"With the assistance of our Environmental Team and Eco Schools plus parent groups and volunteers, a huge amount of work has been done to educate and highlight these issues with our children doing a great job in sending out the message to all.

"This is another opportunity to reinforce that positivity.

"The campaign will begin in Cardenden and then move around the ward, Lochgelly and Benarty depending on the timetable of the Head Teachers."
